Historic Gold in Street Workout and Double Finals in U20 Wrestling: A Successful Week for Armenian Athletes

Between August 13 and 16, Armenian athletes recorded impressive results across international arenas. At the U20 Wrestling World Championship held in Bratislava, Slovakia, two representatives of Armenia advanced to the finals. Simultaneously, in the Latvian capital of Riga, an Armenian athlete captured a historic gold medal at the Street Workout World Championship.

Historic Gold Medal in Riga

During the 2026 Calisthenics (Street Workout) World Championship held in Riga from August 13 to 15, 17-year-old Edgar Papoyan captured the gold medal. He emerged victorious in the middleweight Freestyle finals, outperforming competitors from Ukraine and Israel.

This achievement marks a historic milestone for Armenia, as Papoyan became the country's first athlete to win a world championship title in this discipline. The tournament featured over 170 athletes representing around 50 countries, with the final events taking place on August 15.

Two Finalists at the U20 Wrestling World Championship

On Sunday, August 16, the U20 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championship kicked off in Bratislava, Slovakia, where two Armenian representatives successfully secured their spots in the gold medal matches.

• In the 77 kg weight category, Samvel Terteryan dominated his four matches with an impressive overall score of 26-0. In the semifinals, he defeated Georgia's Giorgi Gogelashvili 6-0. For the gold medal, Terteryan will face off against Javidan Nahmatov of Azerbaijan, setting up a highly anticipated rematch of their U20 European Championship final.
• In the 87 kg weight division, Yurik Petrosyan claimed an 8-1 victory over Austria's Paul Maier in the semifinals, gaining a decisive advantage thanks to a four-point move in the second period. He will compete against Japan's Taizo Yoshida for the world title.
