Moscow Demands Yerevan Choose Between the European Union and the EAEU

Russia is escalating its pressure on Yerevan, demanding a clear choice between the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)—a Moscow-led economic bloc. For the Kremlin, the growing European diplomatic and economic presence in Armenia poses a direct threat to Russia's historical dominance in the region.

Deadline and Russia's Stance

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin has stated that Armenia must make a decision regarding a potential national referendum on its geopolitical alignment by December. During this period, the issue is slated to be discussed at the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (the highest supranational body of the EAEU), where the potential economic and political consequences of suspending Armenia's EAEU treaty will be formally presented.

The Incompatibility Dilemma

Armenia has been a member of the EAEU since 2015, yet recently, Yerevan has significantly deepened its ties with Western institutions. Russian officials have firmly stated that the distinct customs regulations and economic frameworks of the two blocs make it impossible to pursue both integration paths simultaneously.
