Reports of Domestic Violence on the Rise in Armenia Amid Growing Trust in Police

According to Armen Mkrtchyan, Armenia's Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, there has been a recent surge in the number of domestic violence complaints filed by citizens. As reported by the local news outlet Panorama.am, the Deputy Minister noted that this statistical increase was recorded throughout the previous year, as well as during the first 6 months of the current year.

Growing Public Trust and Lingering Legal Challenges

The Armenian police force views this trend as a positive development. The high-ranking official emphasized that victims are now more willing to seek help from law enforcement, attributing this shift to an enhanced level of public trust in the police to handle sensitive cases.

"Last year and during the first 6 months of this year, recorded incidents of domestic violence have increased, which is primarily due to a rise in actual reporting and appeals for help," Panorama.am quoted the official as saying.

Upcoming Legislative Reforms

Despite this positive shift in public behavior, there are still notable gaps within the judicial system regarding the fight against domestic violence. Mkrtchyan assured that the Prosecutor's Office and other relevant law enforcement agencies are being kept fully informed about these documented challenges.
