New Eco-Friendly Wastewater Systems to Protect Armenia's Lake Sevan

During a visit in July, a joint delegation from the European Union, the German UFZ research institute, and the EU4Sevan+ project team met with local Armenian authorities. The delegation assessed targeted sites in the Gavar and Vardenis municipalities to promote nature-based wastewater treatment solutions for the Lake Sevan basin.

Evaluated Settlements and Green Technology

Specialists visited and evaluated several rural settlements, specifically:

• Lchap,
• Sarukhan,
• Lusakunk.

The mission's primary objective is the introduction of decentralized, nature-based wastewater treatment systems. These affordable and sustainable facilities utilize natural processes to filter and purify wastewater before it reaches surrounding ecosystems.

Unlike traditional centralized infrastructure—which requires significant resources to build and maintain in rural areas—these ecological systems empower local communities to manage their water resources independently while significantly reducing pollution risks.

"Decentralized, eco-friendly systems clean wastewater naturally, directly helping local communities and preserving regional biodiversity," the project representatives noted.

Project Funding and Long-Term Goals

The initiative is being carried out under the EU4Sevan+ program. It is co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Government, with implementation managed by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). The ultimate goal is to equip communities in the Lake Sevan basin with sustainable water management tools, enhancing both environmental and economic resilience in the region.
