Armenia Expands Global Ties: Diplomatic Talks in Kenya and a Defense Pact with India

Political consultations took place in Nairobi between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and Kenya. The Armenian delegation was led by Davit Knyazyan, Head of the Multilateral Policy and Development Cooperation Department at the Armenian MFA, while the Kenyan side was represented by Josphat Maikara, Director General for Political and Diplomatic Affairs. This meeting follows the inaugural consultations held in Yerevan in February 2026, which established a formal framework for cooperation.

Areas of Cooperation and Mutual Support

The two sides discussed prospects for developing ties across various sectors, including trade, investment, agriculture, energy, tourism, and healthcare. Officials in Nairobi particularly highlighted the valuable contribution of the Diplomatic School of Armenia, which provides professional training programs for Kenyan diplomats.

Furthermore, Kenya requested Armenia's backing for its two candidates in upcoming international judicial elections. The candidates include Phoebe Okowa for the UN International Court of Justice (ICJ) and Lady Justice Njoki Ndung'u for the International Criminal Court (ICC), both seeking terms from 2027 to 2036. The UN General Assembly's 81st session elections are scheduled for November 2026, while the ICC elections will follow in December.

Biodiversity and the Upcoming COP17 in Yerevan

Special attention was given to global biodiversity conservation efforts. From October 19 to 30, 2026, Yerevan will host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17). According to thekenyandiaspora.com, the event will be held under the theme

Prior to the main conference, a Biodiversity Leaders' Summit is planned for October 16, where the President of Kenya is expected to be in attendance.

Armenia-India Defense Cooperation

According to Indian defense sources, Armenia and India have further solidified their bilateral relationship by signing a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU). This new agreement is specifically aimed at fostering defense innovations and joint military production.
